What equipment do you need to play?

  • Cleats

There are rugby-specific cleats (traditionally called boots), but most people wear soft-ground soccer cleats. These can be picked up cheaply at local sports stores.

  • Mouth Guard

Unlike other contact sports like football and lacrosse, rugby creates safety from NOT having hard pads or helmets, which can actually cause more injuries. A mouth guard ensures mouth, jaw and neck protection, and is the starting point for safe tackling technique (which you will get taught early).

  • Durable Athletic Clothes

You’ll need shorts and a shirt. Really that’s it! It helps if those clothes can take some wear and tear. Other helpful optional items: compression underwear, sports socks, and rugby-specific shorts and jerseys that are made to be more durable.

How can you learn more about the game?

It’s easy to learn about rugby from watching it. There are professional and international leagues for both men’s and women’s rugby.

Why Play?

  • Rugby can be played by all athletic abilities and body types. Unlike other sports where certain attributes are needed, rugby has 15 positions that require different skills and abilities.

  • Rugby can be played after college, into adulthood. Many players play full adult league through their 30’s. You can even play long after that in old-boys and old-girls leagues!

  • Rugby requires discipline and dedication. You’ll get dirty, fatigued, and encounter big challenges. All of that pays off on the field and in your daily life.

  • Rugby is quickly growing in the US, with a popular professional league, four divisions of adult club leagues, NCAA college teams, and increased youth rugby.

  • Playing requires very little equipment. Outside of paying for fields, refs and van travel to away matches, costs are very low - especially compared to other sports.

  • Rugby is very social sport with ongoing team building, community service, and social events. It’s a great way to meet people in the area.

Trying rugby is as easy as showing up to a practice!
